WHAT CAN I ADD TO THIS POST DISCSUSSION What exactly are the differences you noted between the TV series and the novel? Why do you suppose these differences exist--and how do they help us understand Dexter in different ways. Essentially, the novel and series will separate at a particular point--why? Well the tv show obviously moves faster than the Novel does and the novel is going to cover less ground than the show. The Show starts off really similar with Dexter killing the priest and making him face what he had done but not even half way through the first episode are we introduced to Jamie Jaworski, the serial killer janitor, whom in the show is a valet at a fancy country club. The show also shows a lot more back story with Harry and Dexter as Dexter is learning how to control his urges and when to pick his victims. Doakes hates him just as much in the show but we can see it more visually so it feels like there is more hate. There is also some obvious contempt between Detective LaGuerta and Deborah Morgan. In the book and the show he kills Jaworski in a construction site and he gets sloppy with him, more so than he was with the priest. There is also the fact that in both the book and the show that Dexter tailgates the Ice truck and then a lady's head gets thrown at him. In the show we can see just how good Dexter is at faking emotions though he claims to have none. The book and the show do both have this monotonous sort of feel to them where it almost feels like you're just waiting for the climax of the show and it makes you keep watching to see what happens next.
