Scenario 1: You are a nutrition educator working for a non-profit organization. The director of a senior center in the Bronx calls you and asks you to come in to do a nutrition workshop with the seniors in this program. You gladly accept and start by doing a needs assessment. This is what you find out: What are the ages of these seniors? From mid-70s until mid-90s - they are all retired How many will there be? About 15 What is the gender breakdown? More women than men How long should the program be? 1 hour fifteen minutes What time will this be? From 11-12:15, at which time they are served a lunch. I will be paid from my job, but do you have any money for me to work with? How about $35 for supplies Can I serve them food? Yes, this always works to encourage them to come earlier than usual - but know that they will get lunch soon after your program is over, so you don't want to serve too much. What is the space like where I will be working? It's a pretty big space with a number of round tables, around which they will be seated in groups of 5 What other equipment might be available to me to use? Well, if you're thinking about PowerPoint, or something requiring a computer, that's not available. Do any of the seniors have any medical or nutrition-related issues that you know of? Some are overweight; some have diabetes; there are a variety of other medical issues, but a couple of them seem to be very healthy Are there any who don't speak English? There are a number of them who are bi-lingual, but they all speak English Do you think they have much prior knowledge of nutrition? Not much, except maybe they've had some basics somewhere along the way. Do you have any suggestions for topics that you think they could benefit from? I've been thinking about this, maybe something on Common Food/Medication Interactions, or Eating on a Budget or Reading Food Labels or Tips on Cooking for One. Why don't you choose among these 4. Will we need to advertise this workshop? Yes. But we will take care of that and mention that you will be serving them a snack. Before deciding on the topic, come up with at least 2 more questions you would want to ask to help you decide? What are they and make up answers the director might give you. Choose your topic (among the 4 the director suggested) and describe why you chose it. Choose what teaching techniques and activities you would want to use. Choose what sub-topics you'd want to cover (make a list of the general sub-topics - not every word!) Write up 2 objectives for your workshop - something you will know you've accomplished at the end of the hour and fifteen minutes. Choose what food or foods you'd want to serve them. Write up a materials list of what you would need to bring along. Put all of the above together in the form of a lesson plan (see back). You will make a brochure for these seniors (3-column). What will you include in this brochure? Envision what you would like it to look like and describe it. No need to tell me every word that goes on it, but include what's on the front, the back, the first flap as you open it, and inside. What content do you want to cover? What images will you include? What's the title? What colors will you use? This is what they will take home with them - keep this in mind because you want them to keep it, refer to it, even act on it, and not just toss it.
